The weather in Taipei (Taiwan) at the moment

is very alternating. Sometimes it rains a little bit

and most of the times it rains a lot! It's raining season.

Byebye sunshine, I have to deal with the shitty weather

until I will go to HongKong. Examples are shown in these

pictures of some rituals one week before the Dragon Boat

Festival.

Btw, it doesn't matter if it's raining, sun shine or no sun shine,
some of the Taiwanese people walk with an umbrella.

Dragon Boat Festival

A new upcoming event is the Dragon Boat Festival! This is part of Taiwan's culture and traditional sport and it is once a year. We are joining with the "Dutch Team". Our target is not to win the race, there are too many ladies above 40 in our team and beside that, some teams are practising 6 times a week. We're practicing every Saturday morning at the stinky Keelung river.

There’s no question that the Taiwanese love their food. People in Taiwan mainly talk about food. There’s a snack shop every three steps and a restaurant every five. Eating out is a popular activity for the Taiwanese of all ages, I’ve experienced it many times. They like crowded restaurants with bright lights, eating as much and fast as possible, and immediately after that they go outside. I really don’t like chicken with skin and bones, tofu with totally no taste (I always try to order tofu as spicy as possible), duck-blood balls and most of the food of the tiny, dirty, little shops on the markets or small streets. The foods most people consume on a daily basis, what might be called Taiwanese siao-chih, can also be divided into eight main categories:

Poultry: boiled salted duck, roast duck, a-hsiew Yilan-style marinated and smoked duck, chicken stewed in Chinese herbs, “drunken” chicken (steamed in wine), rice with shredded chicken meat, steamed chicken, etc.
Meat: beef noodles, cow viscera soup, mutton rice noodles, mutton stewed with Chinese angelica, dried meat, crispy meat, preserved or processed meat, meatballs, ba-wan (meatballs in dumplings), etc.
Fish and seafood: milkfish porridge, steamed grouper, fried white hairtail, o-a-zen (oyster omelet), mangrove crab porridge, etc.
Rice and noodle dishes: Hsinchu rice noodles, Nantou slender noodles, Taiwanese rice noodles, “slab” noodles, glutinous rice tamales with meat and other fillings, wa-guei “bowl-pasties” (stuffed flour dumplings), and o-a-mi-sua (noodles with oysters), etc.
Bean curd and vegetarian fare: Shenkeng tofu, Dasi dried bean curd, “stinky” tofu, and various kinds of vegetarian dishes.
Sweet and savory pastries: sweet stuffed dumplings such as mua-ji, aboriginal millet cake, and Hakka glutinous rice cake; egg-yolk shortbread, pineapple cake, crispy wedding meat pie, crispy cookie, sun-shaped pastry, ox-tongue-shaped pastry, salty pie, Yokan, white gourd cake, cake made from glutinous rice powder, maltose puff rice balls, etc.
Beverages: honey bean ice, papaya milk shake, taro ice, honey, carambola juice, grass jelly, sugarcane juice, bitter tea, Hakka leicha (pounded tea), jelly fig ice, pearl milk tea, etc.
Sauces and seasonings: spicy soybean sauce, fermented bean curd paste, pickled vegetables, pickled mustard tuber, sesame oil sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, soybean sauce, etc.

We made a trip with our tutor of the hospital. Victor and his friend picked us up early in the morning to make a trip by car to Ilan County. He apologized because he had to the post office to receive a package. He dropped us with his friend at a market and we bought 4 or 5 different kind of fruits. After 15 minutes, Victor came back with even more bags with fruit. So with to much fruit in the car we started our trip with FOOD as main topic.

We went to the East-cost and make a trip through the mountains. After we finished some pieces of fruits in the car we stopped at a city (Ilan) with a small harbour to go to a fish market. Of course we tried many pieces of fresh fish, dried fish, fish candy’s etc. We bought souvenirs as packed dried fish for home. The following activity was eating in a restaurant! Victor ordered 4 bowls with fish and vegetables. The shrimps were on a stick and still alive. The way you eat them? Cook the living shrimps in a hot pot and do it quickly, otherwise the shrimps will suffer too much. The food was really delicious!! However Gertje and I were totally hěn bǎo (full).

Taiwan sometimes hurts my eyes!

Taipei is an energetic and busy city. Even though the positive aspects of Taiwan far outweigh the negative, I would like to show you some of the negative aspects of Taiwan. Taiwan is a land that has become ugly not out of necessity, but by choice. Taipei is an example of a rapid urbanization: the traffic, ugly architecture and quite a lot of smog. Despite of the beautiful shopping malls, department stores, theatres, cafés and clubs, most of the buildings in Taiwan are so breathtakingly drab, dirty, cold and ugly. For miles and miles all you see is a flat-roofed, burglar-proofed, grey ugly buildings. Another negative aspect is one can’t flush ones toilet paper in most of the Taiwanese restrooms. Actually I can’t understand how a country that is as developed as Taiwan can struggle with such basic things as a tar road and a toilet that can handle toilet paper.

This blog has become a so called ‘picture blog’, nevertheless I had the feeling I should share some of my experience during my stay in Asia। I can start with telling about my new experience as an English teacher at a hospital. I am teaching the personnel of the hospital and the focus in this class is on speaking in terms which are used in the hospital. The majority of the personnel are afraid to speak in public, so together with Gertje (my colleague), we are practising dialogues with the group. We are practising the pronunciation of words like ‘N-E-U-R-O-L-O-G-Y department, U-R-O-L-O-G-Y and PRE-EXAMINATION FORM. The class consist of a group of 20+ people with the age of 20 till 55 years old. 2 months ago, I had no doubt in my mind that I will become an English teacher in my life. Now I really enjoy it, despite of the fact that I don’t have the teaching skills of my sister and without being a person with the abilities to be patient, it is going quite well.

If I go to a shop or I meet Taiwanese people on the street, they often say: “Nǐ shì hěn shuài”, which means “You’re a handsome guy”। So my ego gets really a boost during my stay here in Taiwan. A comparison can be made with the first class at the hospital. The first introduction among the students was like: “Hello, I’m Cathy (most of the Taiwanese people have an English name) …. And I am single!” The next one: “Hello, my name is Mrs Wang, I am not single anymore, I am married. I hope my two children will become as handsome as my English teacher.” I was surprised by the fact that it was a formal setting, however they were quite superficial. Even the doctors were saying that. We had to go on pictures with the most famous doctors of the hospital and so on. Anyway, I am enjoying my job as a teacher and I’m exploring a couple of my hidden skills.

My International MBA courses are going well. It’s time consuming but most of the time it is interesting to read. Probably by the time I go back to Holland, I’ve gained quite a lot knowledge about the political situation in Taiwan and China, the business environment and culture and I’ve also developed some ‘soft skills’ by hanging around and working with Taiwanese people.

Instead of a Dutch Embassy there’s
a Netherlands Trade & Investment Office.
The NTIO is dedicated to the promotion
of economic, educational and cultural ties
between the Netherlands and Taiwan.
It also handles visa applications and
consular matters.

Last Friday we celebrated Queens day
at the house of the representative of the NTIO.
The same day I received some ‘stroopwafels’,
chocolate and cashew nuts from Christine (+ fam.).
Thank you very much! I’ve shared the typical

It was 9.20 pm, the first of April 2007. After spending one day in the centre of Tokyo, we (Guy-Louis, Hugo, Mark and me) went to a bar for only one hour. We had to be back at our hostel before 0.30 am otherwise we had to wait until 6.00 am. The club offered us an “all you can drink” hour and we made use of it. After one hour of too much alcohol, I went outside the bar on the third floor of that building to wait for the other guys. Stupid and wasted as I was, I touched a fire extinguisher and a lot of smoke and the whole pink stuff came out. Totally not my intention of course but it happened. Some Nigerian guys (the owners of the club) came to me and kicked and slapped me in the face a couple of times and pushed me to the stairs. I admitted immediately what happened and said that I was guilty. I tried to solve the problem by offering some money, however they called the police. The police arrived and they arrested the three of us. Guy-Louis was the lucky bastard and was able to stay out of the problem. (He was outside that moment)

According to Kara Knafelc, a woman who has lived in both the suburbs and the centre of Tokyo, the group matters in Japan. Generally, people in Japan are expected to think of, not like, the members of their cycle. This can be mean watching what one says, taking care to avoid uncomfortable conflicts, and apologizing profusely when there’s a problem, even if it is unclear who is at fault. This is in contrast to the Western culture, where the individual matters (generally).

We were separated from each other and had a police investigation the whole night; only answering the same stupid questions again and again. From my point of view a child from the first class of primary school can come up with that kind of questions. Anyhow, in between of the investigations that night, I went to our hotel - handcuffed and surrounded by a couple of police officers – to get our backpacks and passports. I admitted what I did that night and said that Hugo and Mark had nothing to do with it. (I told also the Nigerian guys about it, but they wanted to arrest the three of us because of a strange reason. After questioning us, they told us we had to stay at the police cell. I thought, what the heck is going on?!?!? Spraying with a fire extinguisher led to these consequences?!?!?!? And what about Hugo and Mark, they did even nothing? I felt sorry for them.

Arrived in my prison cell, which I had to share with 2 Japanese men and one man from Nigeria, I could only think and sleep (on the ground) the first couple of days. One Japanese man was in there because of ignoring a stop sign from the police. He stayed for 3 nights. Another guy said only the word ‘Mafia’ (Yakuza). The Nigerian guy wanted to stop a fight between a couple of Japanese people and the police arrested him. At the same time a guy from Australia was in there for three weeks. He is a director of a company which exports boat from Japan to Australia and he missed the marriage of his best friend. He was threaten by some big Japanese guys and kicked one of them (and the police arrested him). You can recognize people from the Yakuza (Mafia), some fingers of the most of them are cut. The whole surrounding made me feel guilty (for touching a fire extinguisher?!?) and the worse thing; you are totally powerless, you can’t do anything.

Next day I went to the prosecutor and the day after to the court. Like I commit a real crime or something?!?. It’s really terrible to go there, in the morning you go handcuffed by bus with a lot of other men linked by one rope. A lot of policemen and you have to wait in a small cell with 10 men for 8 hours. You are waiting on a wooden bench to have an investigation of the prosecutor of only five minutes. Terrible!! There’s also one toilet in the same small cell, everybody can see you. Handcuffed pissing is not really my cup of tea!!

A normal day in the police cell is as followed:
6.30 Out of bed and bring your mattress back to a storage room.
6.45 Brush your teeth.
7.00 Breakfast (cold rice with a cold piece of meat/fish and something what looks like vegetables)
9.30 Break of ten minutes to shave, cut your nails or smoke a cigarette of 2 euro each. The only ten minutes you can get out of your cell.
11.30 Lunch, bread with jam or chocolate.
16.30 Diner, same food as in the morning
21.00 Get your mattress and go to sleep while the lights are on the whole night.
During those 11 days I had twice the opportunity to wash myself and have set more than 100 finger prints on different forms filled with the Japanese language.

Day 5 Mr Tygo de Back from the Dutch Embassy visited me and gave me some literature to read. 2 days later I got a lawyer and after 11 days my lawyer was able to arrange the payment to refill the fire extinguisher and clean the floor and we were released. Pffff, unbelievable, what a strange law system! And they are proud of it?!?! How can you lock up three guys, two of them totally innocent and one of them touched a fire extinguisher on a place you can damaged nothing at all?

Back in Taipei felt like home… I love Taiwan!

'Taiwan binnen bereik honderden Chinese raketten'

TAIPEI (ANP) - China heeft bijna achthonderd ballistische raketten opgesteld, waarmee het belangrijke doelen in Taiwan binnen tien uur onschadelijk kan maken. Dat heeft het Taiwanese ministerie van Defensie dinsdag laten weten.

Legerwoordvoerder luitenant-kolonel Chen Chang-hua zei dat het bewind in Peking door het opstellen van 784 ballistische raketten heel Taiwan binnen bereik heeft. ,,Gewapend met de raketten, kunnen ze vijf golven van intensieve bombardementen uitvoeren in een periode van tien uur'', aldus Chen. Hij liet weten dat China in de militaire acties onder meer de havens, militaire commandocentra en vliegvelden kan treffen.

China beschouwt Taiwan nog altijd als een afvallige provincie. De onderlinge relatie is de laatste weken verslechterd. Eind februari besloot Taiwan een commissie op te heffen die adviseert over hereniging van het eiland met het Chinese vasteland. Het Chinese regeringsbureau dat zich met Taiwan bezighoudt, vaardigde daarna een verklaring uit waarin wordt gesteld dat Taiwan op een ,,intense crisis'' afstevent.

De Chinese minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Li Zhaoxing drong er dinsdag bij de Verenigde Staten op aan tegenwicht te bieden aan het Taiwanese streven naar volledige onafhankelijkheid.

Hualien & Taroko Gorge

Samen met Mark, exchange student van de Universiteit van Tilburg, heb ik een trip gemaakt naar Hualien, de grootste stad aan de oostkust.

De stad op zich was de meest lelijke stad die we ooit gezien hebben, maar we hebben grappige dingen meegemaakt zoals karaoke op straat met taiwanese mensen, een gekke amerikaan ontmoet die daar woont en naar leuke bars geweest. Het ongelofelijk mooie strand van Hualien, in combinatie met het lekkere weer.... :(

Dit was ons hostel waar we verbleven. Met 8 bedden op een kamer, even dun matrasje als in onze dorm, maar gelukkig waren we de enige die er sliepen!

Karaoke op straat, we liepen langs en werden gevraagd om mee te zingen. Op de foto zit Mark samen met de mensen die aan het zingen waren. Foto in de Allstar bar, waar we heel toevallig Hugo en Ivo (ook een jongen uit Rotterdam tegen kwamen. We wisten dat Hugo weg was, maar niet naar welke plaats, best toevallig dat je elkaar dan tegen komt in een grote stad.

Hier op de foto met die rare amerikaan, Orrion Hoopman. Hij gaf les aan de burgemeester, hoofd van de politie etc. Er zijn de laatste tijd rellen tussen jongens van Taipei en jongens uit Hualien. Hij had zn nummer gegeven voor het geval dat wij er tussen in zaten en te maken zouden krijgen met de politie, dan kon hij een van z'n 'vrienden' inschakelen. De laatste 2 maanden waren er 3 clubs in brand gestoken daar. Ondanks alle verhalen zijn we gewoon uit gegaan en hebben helemaal niets ervaren van geweld. Het nabij gelegen national park Taroko Gorge is super mooi. We hadden scooters gehuurd, die scooters hadden een top van 115 km/u! We wilden namelijk niet met een tourbus of gids naar het gebied, maar op ons eigen houtje het national park rond crossen.

Taiwanese president provoceert China

AMSTERDAM - De Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian heeft zondag in opmerkelijk scherpe bewoordingen de onafhankelijkheid van zijn land verdedigd en daarmee China tegen de haren in gestreken.
"Taiwan moet onafhankelijk zijn, Taiwan moet zijn eigen naam voeren", zei Chen. Zijn opmerkingen lijken bedoeld om China te provoceren.

China en Taiwan splitsten af in 1949, temidden van een burgeroorlog. Beijing claimt het onafhankelijke eiland niettemin nog steeds als onderdeel van China en dreigt het zo nu en dan met geweld in te nemen.

Taiwan heet officieel de Republiek China en China heet officieel de Volksrepubliek China. De regering van Chen heeft het afgelopen jaar het woord China op de postkantoren vervangen door Taiwan.

Het leven in Taipei

De eerste nacht dat ik aan kwam in Taipei hebben 2 taiwanese buddies van mij, mij meegenomen naar een nightmarket. Bijna alle Taiwanese gaan naar nightmarkets om daar te eten en te shoppen. Ze hebben mij daar Stinky Too Fu en eendenbloed laten eten. Het eerste is wel ok op de geur na, maar eendenbloed dat ging er niet zo goed in.

De vader van een van mijn drie buddies (Taiwanese studenten die mij begeleiden) was jarig. Ik was uitgenodigd om mee uit eten te gaan en daarna ben ik mee naar hun huis geweest en heb daar overnacht. Zijn vader heeft me het spel MahJong leren spelen. Het was een interessante ervaring om te zien hoe het eraan toe gaat bij een Taiwanese familie thuis.

De studie is inmiddels begonnen. Ik volg naast de Manderin Course (chinees) ook vakken als Asia Business Environment, China Business in Global Perspective, International Relations of Taiwan en Cross Border Strategic Alliances. Best pittig, moet er bijna meer tijd in steken dan mijn master in Rotterdam. Maar de vakken zijn veel interessanter dan wat ik tot nu toe heb gehad op HBO of Universiteit. Wat ik niet verwacht had is dat de focus ligt op participatie, presentaties en groepswerk. Opmerkelijk is, als je in een hele stille bibliotheek aan het studeren bent, je niet moet opkijken als ineens iemand keihard een boer laat, is schijnbaar heel normaal hier.

Ik heb de eerste week ook een trip gemaakt naar KaoShiung, een plaats wat te vergelijken is met de groote van Rotterdam wat in het Zuid-Westen ligt van Taiwan. Je kan daar ook shoppen tot je er bij neer valt. Helemaal in Taipei trouwens, Gucci, Prada, Zegna, noem het maar op. Er zijn ontzettend veel shopping malls met echt dure winkels waar bijvoorbeeld Amsterdam een klein dorpje bij is. Net als het uitgaansleven hier, super veel grote dure nightclubs waar je goed kan feesten.

M’n ouders zijn op dit moment in Taiwan en hebben 2 dagen met begeleiding van Taiwanese studenten wat hotspots van Taipei bezocht. Het was leuk om met mijn ouders door Taipei te lopen en het meest opmerkelijke van alles was dat mijn moeder en ik slangenpis hebben gedronken.

Highschool meisjes (en twee jongens) die dachten dat ik een "moviestar" was! Twee vingers opsteken op een foto doen veel aziaten, staat voor victory.

Je bent als westerling bijna altijd de enige niet aziaat op straat.

Taipei

Eindelijk aangekomen in Taipei.

Het is rustig op de campus, het is namelijk vakantie en de meeste studenten zijn naar hun ouders om Chinees New Year te vieren. De campus is super groot, verdeeld over een berg en de dorm van de heren is boven op de berg. Naast de herendorm liggen 6 basketbalvelden en bijna het eerste wat ik gedaan heb is nadat ik in het hoogste gebouw van de wereld ben geweest is nieuwe Air Jordan's gekocht en een leren basketbal!

Hierbij een indruk van mijn zeer kleine kamer met stapelbed (met een matrusje met dikte van 2 cm) en 2 bureautjes die ik moet delen met Robbert.

Koh Phangan, Koh Samui, Koh Tao & Bangkok

We zijn gaan Eiland hoppen en we begonnen bij Koh Phangan. Daar verbleven we in een prachtig resort met een rustig strand.

De Fullmoon party was super, een van de beste feesten die ik heb meegemaakt. Daarna zijn we naar Koh Samui gegaan wat echter een tegenvaller was. We zaten dan wel met onze bungalow aan het drukste strand, maar er waren ontzettend veel verkopers, touristen en prostitutie. Daar zijn we ook maar 1 dag en 2 nachten geweest om vervolgens door te gaan naar HET duikeiland van Thailand, Koh Tao. Dit eiland was rustig en daar zijn we ook een redelijk lange tijd geweest. Hugo heeft daar z'n padi gehaald en ik heb ook nog 2 mooie duiken gemaakt. Ik moest wel eerst mijn skills laten zien voordat ik mocht gaan duiken.

We zijn met veel mensen omgegaan. Het varieerde van Israeliers, Amerikanen, Canadesen, Oostenrijkers tot 3 zweedse gasten die als god in Frankrijk leefden omdat ze veel geld hadden gewonnen met online pokeren (wat hun fulltime job is). Echt gaaf om met zoveel verschillende mensen om te gaan!

Koh Tao heeft een jaarlijks festival met een Miss en Mister Koh Tao verkiezing. Dit was net in de periode dat wij er waren. Goeie bands speelde er en je kon bij veel tentjes lekker eten halen. Ik kwam de jongen (Jack) tegen die sweet corn verkocht op het strand samen met z'n oma. Daarna zijn we veel met die jongen opgetrokken. Ik ben zelfs uitgenodigd bij hem thuis (open huis bestaande uit golfplaten en een hokje met een bed waar hij met z'n oma sliep), waar ik lek geprikt werd door de muggen. Heb veel cadeautjes van hem gehad en heb hem een buddha gegeven.

Daarna zijn we weer terug gegaan naar Bangkok en toen zijn we naar Taipei gevlogen (14 feb.)

Bangkok & Koh Phangan

Sawatdee Khrab!

Bangkok was super! Heb Aom Sangkaew weer gezien, een thais meisje die ik in 2005 in Bangkok ben tegen gekomen. Ze werkt 7 dagen in de week van 7 uur 's-ochtends tot 11 uur 's-avonds! Ze heeft 1 middag in de maand vrij en verder met nieuwjaar een paar dagen. We troffen het, het was juist die middag dat ze vrij had. Samen met Angela, Hugo, Berdien en 2 duitse exchange studenten van de Tammasat University Bangkok zijn we door Aom meegenomen naar wat typische thaise restaurants en bars.

Op de foto zitten wij buiten op straat buckets te drinken en in mn hand heb ik een helium ballon.
De volgende dag hebben Hugo, Angela en ik een trip gemaakt naar the bridge over de river kwai (was ik al een keer geweest) Vervolgens zijn we naar een tempel, museum, etc geweest om te eindigen in een elephant camp in de buurt van Kanchanaburi. Daar overnachten we aan het water en ons balkon hing boven de rivier. Fantastisch wakker worden met een rode zonnengloed over de rivier! Vervolgens hebben Hugo, 2 spaanse meiden en ik op een olifant te gezeten en mee in de rivier gelopen om de oliefanten te wassen! Dat was echt super gaaf. Daarna nog een trip gemaakt op een oliefant met een zitting op z'n rug maar dat was niets vergeleken met het wassen in de rivier. (foto's hiervan zet ik er later op). 's-middags ben ik weer in herhaling getreden en ben weer naar de tijger tempel gegaan en met tijgers op de foto geweest.

Nu zijn we op het eiland Koh Phangan aangekomen. Reis van 16 uur gehad met de bus en boot, was wel luxe maar ik kon niet slapen. Koh Phangan staat bekend om zijn Full moon, half moon en black moon partys. Vrijdag a.s. is er een full moon party op dit eiland en zullen 15.000 mensen op het strand los gaan! Een voorproefje hebben we gisterenavond al gehad toen we na Thaibox wedstrijden naar dat strand zijn toegegaan. Verder super mooi hotel aan het strand waar het zeker goed verblijven is!

Reis naar Bangkok

Hallo allemaal!

De vliegreis is goed verlopen. Slapen ging niet echt maar met het mooie hotel op Khoa San Road in het vooruitzicht was dat geen probleem!
Angela, Hugo en ik zijn naar het hotel gegaan waar ik in 2005 met oa Bart ben geweest. Gelukkig was er nog 1 kamer vrij, tassen hebben we gedropt achter de bali nadat we onze zwemkleding eruit hebben gehaald en toen zijn we meteen naar het dak gegaan om te zwemmen. Op het dak van ons hotel is een zwembad, massagesalon, cocktail bar en een internetcafe. Super uitzicht over Bangkok! Hemels paradijsje in het centrum van Bangkok. Heb vandaag ook maar gelijk even teenslippers gehaald om 'het gevoel' compleet te maken. Daarna typisch Thai food gegeten, prima!

Mn laptop, pak en nette schoenen heb ik na een beetje wantrouwen afgegeven aan een bali die de spullen voor mij 18 dagen hopelijk goed bewaren. Heb ze bij elkaar gedaan in de flightbag gedaan en op slot gedaan. Na een goede taxi gevonden te hebben kwam ik erachter dat ik mn Ipod, boeken en zelfs de lonely planet van Thailand (waar alles in staat op het gebied van hotels, boottijden, resaurants etc.) in mn laptoptas op het vliegveld heb laten liggen. Lekker handig dus. Die informatie hebben we niet meer bij de hand maar we komen er denk ik wel uit. Koop wel een boek van een of ander mannetje op het strand om toch nog relax te kunnen lezen in de zon!

Vanavond of zeker morgenavond nog even Berdien opzoeken die hier in Bangkok aan de universiteit studeert. Wordt waarschijnlijk lachen omdat zij hier met haar exchange groepje al een maand woont en waarschijnlijk al wat mooie plaatsen weet te vinden!
